Given the frequency at which cybercriminals are successful at hacking their way into private data, it would seem that every business would make mobile security a priority. However, a recent Verizon survey shows otherwise.
Almost 40% of those surveyed said bring your own device (BYOD) is a top concern at their organization, yet only 14% had established basic cyber security practices. Currently they are more focused on business performance than mobile security.
According to the survey, 62% of organizations feel that a lack of understanding of the threats that are out there today and the solutions that can protect against them present a significant barrier to undertaking a mobile security strategy. However, almost 80% said they feel disrupting their business with an overly strict mobile security protocol would have a more negative impact than a data breach.
The survey found that among those that do have a mobile security strategy in place, the most popular practices included changing default passwords, testing security systems regularly, encrypting data that is sent though a public network and restricting access on a need-to-know basis. Only 14% of those surveyed said they had all four practices in place. Nearly 90% said they only have one.
Almost 35% of healthcare organizations surveyed said they had encountered data loss through attacks that were due to a mobile device security incident. Restricting what apps your employees can download is a step in the right direction. Some companies have even created a custom app store for a more secure workplace environment.
Also, utilizing application management software can help scan apps for vulnerabilities. Mobile endpoint security measures as well as threat detection on all devices is also a tip that many organizations that want to improve their mobile security follow today.
An education component must also be in place so that employees are made aware of all the risks associated with mobile security. Security training along with frequent testing will ensure that employees are fully aware of current threats, risks and proper use of their mobile devices.
