It’s expected that 2018 will introduce more opportunities for businesses to take advantage of the mobile cloud and mobile edge computing. This will introduce new revenue streams and broaden opportunities for offering a variety of features.
There is particular excitement surrounding the possibilities involving mobile edge computing, due to the growth of augmented reality, 3D and other technology that operates on the edge of the network. Those operators that embrace digital transformation have three key areas they’ll need to prioritize in order to succeed as digital service providers: increasing their subscriber base, grow revenues and cut costs.
These goals present a challenge, but by focusing on the right aspect of digital transformation, all three are possible. Capitalizing on the potential offered by 5G, operators can add network agility and improve customer service in ways that are valuable to their subscribers.
In order to do this, operators need to focus on more than reducing latency and the speed of connection. By embracing a broader view of the opportunity, operators will build a mobile cloud offering an open platform for developers, service providers and over-the-top distributors to create an environment for hosting apps and content. The mobile cloud must be created in a network-wide, distributed format.
The current options available through the large public cloud providers won’t present the right conditions for mobile cloud for operators. It’s up to the operators to create the right open platform to ensure easy and fast deployment of apps and content.
When operators have attempted digital transformation in the past and failed, it was largely due to a lack of visibility into the network, and also into the customer experience. While the operators were focused on measuring data speed, their customers were noticing the problems with latency and voice quality. In addition, the operators had not instrumented each feature separately, so it was impossible to see the quality of each segment separately or track these features.
Prioritizing the instrumentation of the network, along with a focus on monitoring and visibility into the mobile cloud is now more affordable for operators. Creating an open infrastructure that allows for the quick and easy deployment of applications is a good start.
Through a high level of network visibility, operators can begin by supporting fast and dynamic application creation, provisioning and activity. In short, they need to make sure they are providing their customers with what they need at the right time. By deploying a monitoring overlay for visibility onto networks, operators have a way to make high visibility affordable, with software carrying much of the load.
