Telecom 101: common terms you need to know

3G and 4G

Third-generation and fourth-generation wireless capabilities that allow for faster and broader access to information and services through mobile devices. Many businesses now use newer wireless technologies, but 3G and 4G are still useful telecom terms to understand when comparing older and newer networks.

5G

5G is the fifth generation of wireless technology. It is designed to provide faster speeds, lower latency, and better support for connected devices than earlier wireless generations. For businesses, 5G may support mobile teams, backup connectivity, IoT devices, and locations where wired service is limited or unavailable.

Backhaul

The portion of a telecom network that connects smaller networks to a larger core network. For example, backhaul may connect a cell tower, branch office, or local network to a provider’s main network.

Bandwidth

Central office

A central office is a facility that houses telecom equipment used to connect and route calls or data. Traditionally, central offices helped connect telephone calls between local and long-distance networks. Today, many telecom networks also rely on data centers, cloud platforms, and distributed network infrastructure.

Communication Service Provider (CSP)

A Communication Service Provider is a company that provides telecommunications, internet, voice, wireless, or related communication services. Examples can include internet service providers, phone companies, wireless carriers, and business communication providers.

Customer Provided Equipment (CPE)

Customer Provided Equipment refers to telecom or networking equipment located at the customer’s premises. This can include business phones, routers, modems, firewalls, switches, and other devices needed to connect to a provider’s service.

Dedicated Internet Access (DIA)

Dedicated Internet Access is a business internet connection reserved for one customer. Unlike shared internet services, DIA provides dedicated bandwidth and often includes stronger service level agreements. Businesses may use DIA when they need reliable connectivity for cloud services, VoIP, video conferencing, or critical operations.

Ethernet

Ethernet is a common networking technology used to connect devices in a local network. Businesses often use Ethernet connections for computers, phones, printers, servers, switches, and internet handoffs from providers.

Failover

Failover is the process of switching to a backup connection or system when the primary one fails. For example, a business may use wireless backup internet if its main fiber connection goes down. Failover helps reduce downtime and keeps teams connected.

Fiber optic cable

Fiber optic cable uses glass strands to transmit light signals for internet, phone, and data connections. Fiber can support much faster speeds and longer distances than traditional copper wiring, which makes it important for modern business connectivity.

Hosted Private Branch Exchange (PBX)

A hosted PBX is a business phone system hosted by a service provider instead of being managed on-site. It gives businesses call routing, voicemail, extensions, and other phone features without requiring a traditional phone system in the office.

Jitter

Jitter is the variation in the timing of data packets as they move across a network. High jitter can cause poor call quality, choppy audio, frozen video, or unstable meetings. It is especially important for VoIP and video conferencing.

LAN

LAN stands for Local Area Network. It refers to a network that connects devices in a limited area, such as an office, building, or campus. A LAN may connect computers, phones, printers, access points, and servers.

Latency

Latency is the delay between sending data and receiving a response. Low latency is important for voice calls, video meetings, cloud applications, remote work, and real-time systems. High latency can make calls, meetings, and applications feel slow or unreliable.

Long-Term Evolution (LTE)

Long-Term Evolution is a wireless communication standard that allows high-speed data transmission for mobile phones and data terminals. LTE is often associated with 4G wireless service.

Mbps and Gbps

Mbps stands for megabits per second. Gbps stands for gigabits per second. These terms measure data speed. For example, a 1 Gbps connection can move more data than a 100 Mbps connection, assuming the network and equipment can support it.

MPLS

MPLS stands for Multiprotocol Label Switching. It is a networking method that helps direct traffic across a provider’s network. Some businesses still use MPLS for private wide area networks, though many now compare it with SD-WAN and other modern connectivity options.

Packet loss

Packet loss happens when data packets fail to reach their destination. Even small amounts of packet loss can affect voice calls, video meetings, cloud apps, and file transfers. Packet loss can be caused by congestion, faulty hardware, weak wireless signals, or provider issues.

Primary Rate Interface (PRI)

PRI is a traditional phone service connection used with many older business phone systems. It allows multiple voice channels over a digital circuit. Many businesses have replaced or supplemented PRI with SIP trunking, VoIP, or cloud-based phone systems.

Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN)

The Public Switched Telephone Network is the traditional telephone network used for public voice calls. It includes the infrastructure that has supported landline calling for many years.

Quality of Service (QoS)

Quality of Service is a network setting or strategy used to prioritize important traffic. For example, a business may prioritize VoIP and video meeting traffic over less urgent data. QoS helps improve call quality and reduce disruptions.

Redundancy

Redundancy means having backup systems, connections, or equipment in place. In telecom, redundancy may include a backup internet circuit, wireless failover, duplicate hardware, or alternate network paths. Redundancy helps businesses stay online when something fails.

SD-WAN

SD-WAN stands for Software-Defined Wide Area Network. It helps businesses manage network traffic across multiple locations and connection types. SD-WAN can improve performance, simplify network management, and help route traffic based on business needs.

Signaling System Number 7 (SS7)

Signaling System Number 7 is an international set of protocols used for telephone signaling. It helps originate, route, and terminate many calls across public phone networks.

SIP trunking

SIP trunking connects a business phone system to the public telephone network using an internet connection. It can replace or supplement traditional phone lines and is often used with VoIP or PBX systems.

Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) and Synchronous Optical Network (SONET)
